The rules around using this site. The headlines: we publish guidance, not legal or financial advice; always confirm anything important with your local council; we're not affiliated with any UK council, the VOA, or MHCLG.

checkcounciltax.co.uk is a UK-based independent publisher of council tax information. We are not part of any UK local authority, central government department, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), or the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). We do not act on behalf of any of these bodies.
The site exists to make official UK council tax data — rates, bands, discounts, payment options — easier to find, compare, and understand. Information is sourced from public data published by MHCLG, the VOA, individual councils, and the Office for National Statistics, and presented in plain English alongside guidance on common questions.
The information on this site is general guidance only. It is not:
Before making any decision based on what you read here — challenging your band, claiming a discount, applying for a reduction, requesting a different payment plan — confirm the details with your council. Council tax rules change, councils vary in how they apply discretionary discounts, and the figures published can be revised. The official source for your bill is always your council.
We do our best to keep this site accurate. Council tax rates are sourced directly from each council's published schedule and from MHCLG's annual statistical release, then rebuilt every April for the new tax year. However:
If you spot an error, please tell us and we'll correct it. We do not accept liability for losses arising from acting on information that turns out to be inaccurate or out of date.

The underlying data we use is published by UK government bodies under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We comply with that licence and credit the relevant sources on the methodology page.
We link to other sites — councils, GOV.UK, the VOA, occasionally to relevant commentary or news. Once you leave this site, those organisations' terms apply, not ours. We don't endorse any third party's content unless we explicitly say so.
We don't currently have any affiliate or commercial partner links. If we ever add them — for example to council tax debt advice, rebanding services, or moving home tools — they'll be clearly labelled and they will not influence our editorial choices about which councils to cover or how we present data.
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be flagged on the homepage and on this page. The date at the top of this page tells you when it was last revised.
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be heard in the English courts.
